- defensive - may be taught in DADA and/or duelling

• 7th year - 30-50% accuracy

N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

A

Accio (Summoning Charm)

Description: This charm summons an object to the caster, potentially over a significant distance.
(Age-Line Spell)
Description: Creates a line that is impassable by people below a set age.
Aguamenti
Description: Produces a jet of water from the witch or wizard's wand.
Alohomora
Description: Used to open and unlock doors, but doors may be bewitched so that this spell has no effect.
Anapneo
Description: Clears the target's airway, if blocked.
Angor (Suffocation Curse)
Description: Gives the caster the ability to, essentially, suffocate his victim from a distance. The target would feel as if he were drowning underwater and unable to get air into his lungs (as opposed to strangulation).
Notes: Beam of orange light. Moderate skill level. Spell must hit the throat. Victim cannot use verbal spells while affected.
Drawbacks: As a duration spell, the caster cannot use any other spells while concentrating on this one. As soon as the caster loses concentration, the spell is broken and the victim can breathe again.
Counter - Distracting/interrupting the caster
(Anti-Cheating Spell)
Description: Cast on parchment or quills to prevent the writer from cheating while writing answers.
(Anti-Disapparation Jinx)
Description: Used to prevent Disapparation in an area for a time. Presumably can be used to prevent an enemy from entering a defended area, or used to trap an enemy in an area.
Aparecium
Description: This spell makes invisible ink appear.
(Atmospheric Charm)
Description: Presumably causes weather patterns to be created. A malfunction of this spell may have been causing offices in the Ministry to rain.
Avada Kedavra (Killing Curse)
Description: Causes a bright green flash and a rushing noise, the curse causes instant death to the victim. There is no known counter-curse or blocking spell, although the caster can be interrupted, the victim can dodge the green jet, hide behind solid objects (which burst into flame when hit by it), or, if the casting wizard is not sufficiently competent, the curse may be completely ineffective.
Avis
Description: This charm creates a flock of birds that pour forth from the caster's wand.

B

(Bat-Bogey Hex)

Description: Grotesquely enlarges the target's bogeys, gives them wings, and sets them attacking the target.
(Bubble-Head Charm)
Description: Puts a large bubble of air around the head of the user.

C

(Caterwauling Charm)

Description: Anyone entering the perimeter of a Caterwauling Charm sets off a high-pitched shriek.
Cave Inimicum
Description: Spell used to strengthen an enclosure from enemies.
(Cheering Charm)
Description: Causes the person upon whom the spell was cast to become happy and contented, though heavy-handedness with the spell may cause the person to break into an uncontrollable laughing fit.
Colloportus
Description: Magically locks a door, preventing it from being opened by Muggle means.
(Colour-Change Charm)
Description: Changes an object's colour.
Confringo (Blasting Curse)
Description: Causes anything that the spell meets to explode.
Confundo (Confundus Charm)
Description: Causes the victim to become confused and befuddled.
(Conjunctivitus Curse)
Description: A curse that causes great pain to the victim's eyes.
Crucio (Cruciatus Curse)
Description: Inflicts unbearable pain on the recipient of the curse. The effects of the curse depend upon the desires and emotions of the character - to produce the "excruciating" pain implied by the name, one must (according to Bellatrix Lestrange) desire to cause pain purely for its own sake. The extreme pain inflicted by the curse when cast so - without any apparent evidence of physical harm - makes it uniquely suited as a form of torture.
Cruorem Lacrimo (Blood Draining Curse)
Description - Causes the victim's blood to begin leaking copiously from their pores, concentrated mostly around the soles of the feet, palms, hairline, underneath the eyes, and neck.
Notes - Manifests as a wavy, thick beam of black light. The skill level of the caster is relevant to the damage level of this curse. The more skilled the wizard, the more the victim will bleed -- it is possible, although extremely difficult, to cause the victim to bleed out from every pore on their body.
Drawbacks - As a duration spell, the caster cannot use any other spells while concentrating on this one. As soon as the caster loses concentration, the spell is broken, although it may take several seconds up to minutes for the victim to stop bleeding.
Counter - Can be blocked or weakened by protego horribilus (depending on the more powerful caster); high level casters can stop the flow of magic with finite incantatem.
(Cushioning Charm)
Description: Creates an invisible cushioned area.

D

Defodio (Digging Spell)

Description: used to dig one's way out of or through something
Deletrius
Description: used to remove remove magical images (such as phantoms from priori incatatum)
Densaugeo
Description: Causes the teeth of the recipient to grow at an alarming rate.
Deprimo
Description: blasts a deep hole through something.
Depulso (Banishing Charm)
Description: Sends an object away from the caster
Counter: Accio
Descendo
Description: used to lower something - for example a barrier or attic stairs
Diffindo (Severing Charm)
Description: used to cut something away from something else (a cover from a book, a rope in half)
(Disillusionment Charm)
Description: causing an object or person to become invisible
Notes: The described sensation of a Disillusionment Charm is a feeling "something cold and wet trickling down your back." When the charm is lifted, the subject feels something hot trickling down their back.
Dissendium
Description: Causes simple hidden passageways to open up (i.e. those that are merely hidden behind a statue or wall)
(Drought Charm)
Description: Causes water to evaporate
Duro
Seen/Mentioned: Seen in Deathly Hallows, cast by Hermione while escaping from Death Eaters in Hogwarts.

E

Engorgio (Engorgement Charm)

Description: Causes objects to swell in size.
Entrail Expelling Curse
Description: Causes entrails to be expelled via the most convenient means.
(Entrancing Enchantments)

Notes: When this spell is cast, the person feels their injured body part go very hot and then very cold.
Erecto
Description: Used to erect a tent or other structure.
Evanesco (Vanishing Spell)
Description: Makes the target vanish.
Notes: According to Minerva McGonagall Vanished objects and organisms go "into non-being, which is to say, everything." It is suggested that vanished objects can be recovered.
Expecto Patronum (Patronus Charm)
Description: creates an ethereal, silvery animal (which holds some significance to the caster); this animal can be used to carry messages or to drive away dementors.
Notes: the apparition can only be conjured if the caster is able to think of a happy thought and hold onto it; cannot/will not be used by dark wizards or dark creatures; can change depending on major life circumstances; difficult for many wizards to master
Expelliarmus
Description: This spell is used to disarm another wizard, typically by causing the victim's wand to fly out of reach. It can also throw the target backwards when enough power is put into it.
Expulso
Description: A spell which causes objects that it comes in contact with to violently explode.
(Extinguishing Spell)
Description: Extinguishes fires

F

Ferula

Description: Creates a bandage and a splint.
(Fidelius Charm)
Description: A charm involving secret information hidden within the soul of a Secret-Keeper. This information is irretrievable until the Secret-Keeper chooses to reveal it; those who have the secret revealed to them cannot reveal it to others.
Notes: Upon a Secret-Keeper's death, all those who have been told the secret become Secret-Keepers in turn, and can pass the secret on to others.
(Fiendfyre)
Description: A seemingly unstoppable cursed fire, the flames of which take the shape of fantastic creatures that pursue those caught in its path. It is shown to be capable of destroying Horcruxes.
Notes: Extremely dangerous except to the most capable and experienced of dark wizards
(Finger-removing Jinx)
Description: Removes the victim's fingers.

Furnunculus (Furnunculus Curse)
Description: Causes the target to become covered in boils.

G

Geminio

Description: Creates a duplicate of any object cast upon.
Glacius (Freezing Charm)
Description: Freezes the target
Glisseo
Description: Causes the steps on a stairway to flatten and form a ramp or slide.
(Gripping Charm)
Description: Used to help someone grip something with more effectiveness. This charm is placed upon Quaffles to help Chasers carry the Quaffle whilst simultaneously holding their brooms.
(Gubraithian fire)
Description: Causes something to burn forever

H

(Hair-Thickening Charm)

Description: Thickens one's hair.
Homenum Revelio
Description: Reveals humans near the caster.
(Homorphus Charm)
Description: Causes an Animagus or transfigured object to assume its normal shape.
(Hurling Hex)
Description: Causes brooms to vibrate violently in the air and try to buck their rider off.

I

Ignis Infusco (Black Fire)

Description - Creates a small cursed fire that spreads over its target with odorless, heatless black flames.
Notes - Magic presents as a single jet of black flame. Flames burn upon contact, despite giving off no apparent heat; water is uneffective. Because it irreversibly scars, it is considered by those in the healing profession to be dark magic.
Drawbacks: Difficult to control; frequently, scars bear witness to a novices's first attempts at the spell
Counter: Finite Incantatem

Impedimenta (Impediment Jinx, Impediment Curse)

Description: This hex is capable of tripping, freezing, binding, knocking back and generally impeding the target's progress towards the caster.
Imperio (Imperius Curse)
Description: Causes the victim of the curse to obey the spoken/unspoken commands of the caster. The experience of being controlled by this curse is described as a complete, wonderful release from any sense of responsibility or worry over one's actions, at the price of one's free will. Resisting the effect of the curse is possible, however, and several individuals have been able to successfully overcome it.

Notes:
Effect on caster: feeling of warm tingling from the mind to the casting arm.
Effect on victim: feeling of indescribable contentment; every worry wiped free and only a dim awareness of surroundings.

Casting: Casting must be line-of-sight at a reasonable distance. Nonverbal or verbal, but nonverbal requires a great deal of practise and experience (inner circle & aurors only). Only the imperio is cast - the commands themselves need not be spoken aloud (DH & GOF).
Timing: Effects are long-term unless otherwise specified by the caster; the caster should 'reapply' the curse every few weeks to ensure it remains in effect, but for a very powerful caster this is not always necessary.
Lifting: A number of enchantments or charms can lift the imperius, as can the victim's realisation and struggling against it (takes a great deal of willpower and effort). A victim will not remember his actions while imperiused, nor will he be aware that he was imperiused at all, unless the caster was stupid enough to imperius him to his face.
(Imperturbable Charm)
Description: Makes objects such as doors impenetrable (by everything, including sounds and objects).
Impervius (Impervius Charm)
Description: This spell makes something repel (literally, become impervious to) substances and outside forces, including water.
Inanimatus Conjurus
Description: Conjures an object (must be inanimate)
Incarcerous
Description: Ties someone or something up with ropes.
Incendio
Description: Produces fire.
Infinitus Gaudium (Pleasure Charm)
Description: Causes a wave of indescribable pleasure, similar to a drastically amplified cheering charm. When the spell is lifted, it will leave the target feeling euphoric for several minutes before he crashes.
Notes: Blast of bright red light that fades into pink. Considered difficult.
Drawbacks: Duration spell -- no other spells may be cast during the endurance of this spell. Prolonged use can lead to anxiety and excessive use to nerve-damage. Psychological addiction and tolerance follows habitual use and insanity can follow constant abuse.
Counter: Finite Incantatem
(Intruder Charm)
Description: Detects intruders and sounds an alarm.

J

(Jelly-Legs Jinx)

Description: A jinx that renders its victim's legs temporarily useless, leaving them to wobble around helplessly until the effect wears off or the counter-jinx is performed.
(Jelly-Brain Jinx)
Description: Presumably affects the target's mental processes.
(Jelly-Fingers Curse)
Description: Causes the target's fingers to become almost jelly-like so as to make it uneasy for the victim to grasp objects.

K

(Knee-Reversal Hex)

Description: Causes the victims knees to appear on the opposite side of their legs.

L

Locomotor-

    - Arbus: trees
    - Corpus: bodies

Musculus Mortis (Muscle Killing Curse)

Description: A curse that slowly kills the muscle and tissue of the area it strikes
Notes: High level of skill; presents as thin white-blue light; duration spell -- spreads only as long as the spell is maintained. Weakened if used nonverbally.
Drawbacks: Cannot penetrate any tissue protected by bone (many organs, brain); slow magic, typically only used on immobile victims.
Counter: N/a. Healing must be performed within several hours or muscle damage is permanent.

N

Nox

Description: Ceases the Lumos spell on one's own wand.
Counter: Lumos

Obliviate (Memory Charm, Memory-Modifying Charm)
Description: Used to hide a memory of a particular event.
Obscuro
Description: Causes a blindfold to appear over the victim's eyes, obstructing their view of their surroundings.
Oppugno
Description: Causes conjured objects to attack.
Orchideous
Description: Makes a bouquet of flowers appear out of the caster's wand.
Ossisverso (Bone twisting curse)
Description: When the spell hits the target's body, the bone(s) in the immediate area will begin to twist in different directions. The longer the spell is held, the more they will twist, until eventually they begin to splinter and break. Obviously, it is a very painful spell.
Notes: Dark blue, thin stream of light. The spell does not twist every bone in the body at once -- it only effects the immediate area that the jet of light hits. Easy/moderate skill level. As with all dark magic, the damage takes longer to heal.
Drawbacks: As a duration spell, the caster cannot use any other spells while concentrating on this one. As soon as the caster loses concentration, the spell is broken.
Counter: Distracting the caster

P

Pack

Description: Packs a trunk, or perhaps any luggage.
(Permanent Sticking Charm)
Description: Makes objects permanently stay in place.
Petrificus Totalus (Body-Bind Curse)

Notes: The eyes of the target remain mobile (and presumably the vital organs)
Piertotum Locomotor
Description: Spell used to animate statues and suits of armour to do the caster's bidding.
(Placement Charm)
Description: A charm which temporarily places an object upon a desired target.

Description: Refills whatever the caster points at with the drink originally in the container.

Description: Brings someone out of unconsciousness.
Counter: Stupefy
Reparo
Description: Used to repair broken or damaged objects.
Repello Muggletum (Muggle-Repelling Charm)
Description: Keeps Muggles away from wizarding places by causing them to remember important meetings they missed and to cause the Muggles in question to forget what they were doing.
Repleo Cruor (Blood Replenishing Charm)
Description: Speeds up the body's natural production of plasma and red blood cells in order to counteract blood loss.
Notes: wand must come into contact with patient's blood veins; spell presents as a faint red glow. Difficult-to-impossible spell for the lay-person; third year training for actual healers
Effects on patient:
patient feels warmth (occasionally to the level of discomfort) and wet
Drawbacks: Amount of concentration needed makes triage difficult; considered last recourse if no blood replenishing potions are available (potion itself contains dense nutrients to counteract the body's increased production rate). Can only be performed after wounds are closed. Cannot be used to 'drain' victim of poison.
Counter - Minuo (blood drawing spell), Cruorem Lacrimo (blood draining curse)
Revulsio (Revulsion Jinx)
Description: Forces target to withdraw
Notes: Flash of purple light
Rictusempra (Tickling Charm)
Description: The subject experiences the sensation of being tickled.
Notes: This spell takes the form of a jet of silver light.
Riddikulus
Description: A spell used when fighting a Boggart, "Riddikulus" forces the Boggart to take the appearance of an object upon which the caster is concentrating. When used correctly this will be a humorous form.

S

Saevio Verbera (Smashing Curse)
Description: Victims feels as though they have been hit with something large, solid and forceful, radiating from the target area. Cast with the proper force, the spell can break bones and tear muscle.
Notes: bright purple fire marking the affected area; these flames are not hot or tangible. The immediate area and surrounding muscle/bone is affected. Can be cast silently by a wizard of sufficiently high expertise.
Drawbacks: Casting level is fairly high, and requires a decent amount of force of mind; someone who does not like hurting people would have great difficulty using this spell to cause more than bruise
Counter: Protego horribilis

Salvio Hexia

Description: Provides some form of protection against hexes.
Scourgify (Scouring Charm)
Description: Used to clean something.
Serpensortia
Description: Conjures a serpent from the spell caster’s wand.

Stupefy (Stunning Spell, Stupefying Charm, Stunner)
Description: Puts the victim in an unconscious state.
Notes: Beam of red light.
Counter: Rennervate
Suo Derma (Basic stitching charm)
Description: Superficially closes open wounds on the skin -- a temporary measure to stop massive bleeding.
Notes: Caster moves her wand over the area of skin she wishes to close; appears as a white light until the skin has closed up. Moderate skill level for non-healers; part of basic training for healers.
Drawbacks: This is a temporary fix intended to stop bleeding long enough to get from one location to another. Any physical activity and the wound will reopen

(Switching Spell)
Description: Causes two objects to be switched for one another

Name: Acid Curse
Incantation: Igneus Liquidus
Description: Creates a ball of green acidic liquid that explodes toward the target and eats through clothing and flesh.
Notes: The spell requires a moderate skill level to learn, and can generally only be used on a single target, unless the caster is creative enough to aim the spell in a way where the ball of acid explodes onto several targets at once, although they would take less damage than if they were hit directly by the spell.
Drawbacks: None, other than the acid may splash back against the caster if they are standing too close to where it hits.
Counter: N/A. Can be blocked by shield spells or other solid objects.

Name: Lightening Curse
Incantation: Levitas Offendo
Description: The equivalent of being stuck by lightening -- the victim is stuck by a bolt that sends a powerful shock of electricity through their body. It is potentionally lethal, but more often than not the victim can survive.
Notes: The spell takes on the appearance of a bolt of lightening coming straight from the caster's wand, and requires a high skill level to cast properly. It is a dangerous spell to learn due to its potentially lethal effects that could backfire against the caster. As with real lightening, both water and metal act as a conductor if struck with the spell.
Drawbacks: If a lesser skilled witch or wizard attempts the curse, it could potentially backfire and send a jolt of electricity through them instead.
Counter: N/A. Can be blocked by shield spells or other solid objects, unless striking water or metal.

Name: Slicing Hex.
Incantation: Abscido.

Description: A more powerful version of the Severing Charm that is better suited for battle (rather than as magical scissors), although it is not dark magic; it will slice open clothes, skin, and some muscle at the most basic level, and can go deeper and even cut through bones at its most powerful. It cannot, however, cause people to bleed profusely from any wounds caused by it the way the future Sectumsempra will be able to do so in the future, unless the spell was both powerful and accurate enough to hit a major artery. Therefore, it is usually not deadly, but can be under the right circumstances.

Notes: The spell requires a slashing movement of the wand and appears as a bolt of red light; upon contact with the target, the affected area(s) will be cut open as if someone had attacked the person with a knife. How powerful the spell it depends on the skill of the caster -- it's easy to cut through clothes and skin like a Severing Charm; moderate skill is needed to cut through some depth of muscle; a high level of skill, practice, and focus is necessary to slash someone deeply, as well as to sever bones. Likewise, the length of the slash varies with skill, concentration, and intent. The spell also only affects the area of the body the light hits and usually, it can only create one slash; however, someone highly skilled and focused with the hex may be able to cut a target in multiple places at once.

Drawbacks: The spell has a very limited range (around five feet), and the further away one is from one's target, the less damage it will do and the less accurate it will be.

Counter: None. However, it can be blocked with Shield Charms (including Protego), solid objects, or deflected to the side or back at the caster, though the last requires a great deal of skill. The after-effects are relatively easy to treat with using dittany and other Healing spells (eg. Suo Derma) and potions, though there will be some scarring, especially if it was a powerful hex; as the spell isn't dark magic, severed limbs can be re-grown, although the amount of time and magic it takes is proportional to the size of the body part that was lost, and it may not be quite as good as the original limb.

Name: Gouging Hex.
Incantation: Effodio.

Description: A modified version of the Digging Spell (Defodio) that can be used specifically on animate beings, particularly humans in battle. The spell digs out a chunk of skin and muscle from the target area as if someone used something sharp to scoop it out, and if it hits the eye, it will gouge out the eyeball and feel as if a person jammed their thumb into the socket. It is not dark magic.

Notes: The spell appears as a streak of blue light that only affects the immediate target area it hits. In terms of skill, a moderately skilled person will be able to fire it off and do some damage, although it takes a higher level of skill and considerable practice to be able to dig out skin and muscle more deeply and from a wider area; it also takes a great deal of talent to be able to gouge out someone's eye, given the accuracy and power needed to do so. At the very highest level, which requires a lot of skill and practice (ie. this is generally well beyond even the seventh-year students), the caster may be able to hold the spell and have it dig continuously deeper until it is lifted.

Drawbacks: For the advanced version of the hex that can gouge continuously, the caster must concentrate on holding it and cannot cast any other spells at the same time.

Counter: It can be blocked with Shield Charms (including Protego) and solid objects, or deflected if the person is sufficiently skilled and practiced at it; for the continuous version, the only defence is to distract the caster, as it cannot be blocked once the initial light has hit. Dittany can stop the bleeding, but more advanced Healing magic has to be used to re-grow the gouged muscle and skin, and scarring can be minimised if treated quickly. If an eye is gouged out with the spell, how well the eyeball is re-grown, if at all, depends on the Healer's skill and how much time has passed since it was removed.
