These rules are not meant to hamper game play, but improve it. Anyone seen to be violating these rules will be warned. Continued misbehaviour that interrupts the game or makes other players uncomfortable will result in removal.
player.conduct
Don't be an asshole. Harrassment or abuse of any kind will be rewarded with a swift kick in the ass out of the game.
Do not godmod; this means several things: assuming blows or spells land, thinking or acting for another character, or making your character infallible/invincible.
Do not metagame; your mod's pet peeve: metagaming means your character is mysteriously aware of what other characters are doing or saying or of future events without reason. If you are in doubt, assume they know less. This isn't to say that your character can't pick up on subtext or context clues, but they should be wrong as frequently as they are right.
IC stays IC and OOC stays OOC. If you have issues with another player, do not drag it IC. It's obvious and frustrating for everyone. You don't need to love each other, but you do need to be a part of the game and its plot.
Spelling and grammar mistakes happen. Do not point them out IN CHARACTER to a person unless it is obviously intentional. It's rude.
character.conduct
Actions have consequences. Your character cannot do whatever he or she pleases without consequences. This is a game, not your PSL that just happens to have other characters hanging out.
Your character needs to conform to the expectations of their house. We expect Slytherins to act like Slytherins and Gryffindors to act like Gryffindors. That doesn't mean your Slytherin has to be ~evil~ or your Gryffindor can't hate muggleborns, but they were sorted into their respective houses for a reason.
Your character should not seriously deviate from what you have represented on your application (I'm not talking about natural character evolution, but drastic personality or belief changes from the get-go or without cause). If this happens, I will ask you to change your character, reapply, or withdraw from the game.
If you are playing a pureblood or a fullblood, please remember that such families often have very little understanding of muggle culture and objects; your character should not be intimately acquainted with automobiles, for example..
activity.requirements
All players are expected to update once every two weeksper student with something substantial, either in journals, owls home to their parents, or threads/logs. This is the absolute minimum. We also expect you to be active in journal commenting (at least among your own houses).
Journal: 200 words or 10 sentences with combined entries Owl: 200 words in one entry Thread: 3 multi-sentence tags
Tom Riddle is required to have an extra log/narrative per month in addition to the base requirement.
Prefects and head students are required to volunteer for prefect plots when they are available, in addition to base requirements. Student authority is also expected to keep an eye on journal behaviour and issue reprimands when things get out of hand.
Professors are required to create lesson plans (example here and template here) and be active-ish in the journals, though there is no quantitative requirement for journal activity. The entire term's worth of lesson plans is required in lieu of a history on the application in order to compensate for hiatuses and sudden RL circumstances that may interfere with timely posting of lessons. These lesson plans become property of the game and will be used even if you drop the character.
Every month there will be an activity post. You must link to your current activity. This will be your way of showing you wish to remain in the game. Any members who don't complete this requirement will be removed without notice unless they are on hiatus. If players start posting right before activity checks and not during the rest of the month, checks will be done twice a month.
Posting on the hiatus post is mandatory if you will be gone longer than a few days or if you may miss an activity check. I am not going to scan the ooc to find out why you haven't replied to a check.
hiatus.requirements
When you are going on hiatus, you must post your hiatus on the hiatus post.
If your hiatus is going to be longer than a month and you are playing a prefect, head student, or Tom Riddle, we ask that you withdraw that character from the game so that major progress is not interrupted.
Any hiatus lasting longer than six weeks warrants removal from the game. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis.
student.journals
Journals are a communication device created by and for the school as an experimental way to keep students close-knit during war-time and to encourage interhouse unity. Whether or not this latter goal has worked is a matter of mixed opinion.
For the sake of simplicity, names appear next to all entries and comments. There are no anonymous comments.
Icons are not visible in game.
WARDS
There may only be one ward per entry or comment. This means a single entry cannot include both public and private wards on the entry itself (such a post should be split up into two posts), and though comments may be differently warded than the entry, each comment can only have one ward each (see below). Please note that if an entry is warded, subsequent comments under the same ward need not rewrite that ward in the subject heading.
WRONG:
RIGHT
Entries and comments can be warded by anyone with a wand. Wards must be specific. If every person in the game cannot name everyone on your ward, you need to be more specific.
WRONG:
"Warded against purists" (character doesn't know whom they are for certain)
"Warded to friends" (players won't necessarily know who's included)
"Warded against Slytherin purebloods" (ambiguous in cases where characters lie about their blood types -- Tom Riddle for example)
RIGHT:
"Warded to Avery, Riddle, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rookwood, Aeneas Nott" (specific)
"Warded to Gryffindors" (house members are known icly and oocly)
"Warded against professors" (professors' identities are known icly and oocly)
"Warded to 5th year potions students" (classmates are known icly and oocly)
Because ward magic is performed on a book to which other people do not have access, wards are not breakable. Either a ward works or it fails. No "breakable by John Smith"s.
All strikethroughs are unreadable unless noted otherwise.
OOC notes should be made in small italics
No bodily fluids except blood or tears. I will cut you.
Characters can't read wards in which they aren't included, no matter whose journal they have.
roleplay.guidelines
Roleplay can be either in the form of threads or IM/gdoc logs - we have no preference. Please put all posts behind an lj-cut and label them with (something like) the following
Who
Where
When
Summary
Rating (including warnings)
Put the actual date! Not 'tuesday' or 'this afternoon.'
Ratings should not go above R, this is a school game and I don't want to read your paedophilic sex logs. Suggestive posts are fine, but they should fade to black.
You will not ship professors and students. Period.
We have two bans ('hard limits') on what can be posted: no rape and no paedophilia (including non-satirically suggestive posts about anyone under 5th year). You will only get one warning.
character.limits
Players can have up to 5 characters - one from each house (including one professor and one student in the same house).
Waiting time is 2 weeks between the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd students, respectively, and 4 weeks between the 3rd and 4th students.
Professors may be picked up at any time and do not contribute to waiting time.
Players can only have a professor and student in the same house if the double-house occurs on their 5th character.
I reserve the right to deny any hold based on your current activity levels. If you are rping the bare minimum, I prefer you to keep a small number of characters.
Holds are first come, first serve. Period.
frequently asked.questions
What is the current date and time?
Game time is real time, 1943. Note that because this is AU, events will deviate from those in canon after December 1942.
What the heck can my purist listen to/read if they aren't allowed muggle stuff? Since we don't have a complete wizarding cultural database to work from, purists will be given some leeway in culture references.
Any reference to a cultural piece (music, art, literature) prior to ~1850 is considered acceptable for purebloods. Classical music has more leeway, literature has less leeway. We are attempting to allow purist characters some flexibility when referencing art in their journals or homes while maintaining the air of separation from muggle modern culture.
What does this mean to the non-purist player? You should refrain from calling purist characters out for listening to Vivaldi, having a Caravaggio on their wall, or quoting Plato.
I don't like so and so's ship. This isn't a question but I expect you to do something about it.
I suggest using the scroll bar.
Can I have a homosexual character?
Yes, but you must be aware of the times. There will be no characters who are openly out (to close friends doesn't count). In 1943, homosexuality was illegal in Great Britain and Ireland and punishable by prison, and prejudice was rampant.
