1900s
1899 •Grindelwald expelled from Durmstrang for his highly dangerous and nearly fatal experiments on other students; he meets Albus Dumbledore in Godric's Hollow, where he is convinced he can discover the secrets of the Hallows. They discuss plans for the subjugation of Muggles and Dumbledore gives Grindelwald the motto he will use to ruin the lives of thousands: "For the Greater Good."
•Grindelwald and Aberforth Dumbledore argue and fight, Albus joins in the duel and Ariana Dumbledore is killed in the confusion. Grindelwald immediately takes a portkey back to his home in Switzerland and begins plotting to put his and Dumbledore's plans into action. He attempts to contact Dumbledore over the next few years to convince him to join the cause, but Dumbledore, in his grief, burns the letters, losing one of the few chances he would have to really warn Europe.
1901 •Grindelwald begins his search for the Elder wand using extensive research into the blood-spattered history and folk-lore of its journey from owner to owner.
1902 •Grindelwald's search takes him to Germany, where he follows in hot pursuit of any rumours or legends that will help him discover the true owner.
1903 •Grindelwald discovers Gregorovitch the wandmaker in (Austria-)Hungary and steals the elder wand; by attacking Gregorovitch before leaving, he gains ownership of the wand and begins exploring its uses.
•Minister for Magic Faris Spavin retires; Minister Eugene Brimton appointed
1906 •After three years of more atrocious experiments and Muggle serial killing, Grindelwald flees Switzerland for Austria-Hungary, where he begins riling up support for his Muggle dominating ideas.
1910s
1911 •Grindelwald creates a political party in Austria-Hungary and gathers support for the movement to abolish the Statute of Secrecy.
•Dumbledore becomes Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts.
1914 •The Great War begins.
1915 •Crimes against Muggles and Muggleborns begins to rise under Grindelwald's political influence; the government dismisses it as the natural influence of the Muggle war.
1918 •The Great War ends with the defeat of Germany
1919 •The International Confederation of Wizards decrees that wizarding boundaries in Europe be redrawn to match those created by the end of the Great War, despite official protests from Austria-Hungary. Grindelwald's political party, now divided between two nations, experiences a huge increase in popularity and membership in both.
1920s
1920 •Grindelwald's (and other political leaders') request for joint government of Austria and Hungary is denied by the International Confederation of Wizards
1921 •Austria withdraws its membership from the International Confederation of Wizards; Grindelwald continues to campaign in both nations.
•Hitler becomes leader of the Nazi Party
•Minister for Magic Brimton steps down. Minister George Sparkwit appointed.
1922 •Grindelwald begins his campaign of "one nation, one culture"; Hungary withdraws its membership from the International Confederation of Wizards
1923 •Grindelwald boasts the largest combined political party in Austria-Hungary. Complaints by other political leaders of threats and bribery are largely ignored. Several reporters claiming the President of Austria and Minister of Hungary are in Grindelwald's pocket mysteriously go missing.
•A missing reporter returns and retracts his earlier claims; Grindelwald's party begins publishing its own nationalist newspaper, further building its influence.
1924 •Grindelwald's political party successfully lobbies for joint governship of Austria and Hungary. The divided governments reform their central office in Budapest, and the multi-national cabinet is reestablished. Many prominent members proudly proclaim their membership to the "Nationalist Party."
•Austria-Hungary receives a warning from the International Confederation of Wizards that Muggle boundaries must be respected. The government issues no response.
1925 •The International Confederation of Wizards issues an Embargo on Austria and Hungary.
1926 •With imports at an all time low, Austria-Hungary suffers a crippling economic depression. Thousands lose jobs and homes, and many cannot afford to eat.
•The Cleansweep One revolutionises Quidditch
•Tom Riddle is born in an orphanage; his mother dies within the hour
1927 •Austria-Hungary's depression continues. The Nationalist Party begins pumping money from "anonymous donors" (Grindelwald and his wealthy supporters) into soup kitchens, where hungry citizens are fed a good meal and a dose of Grindelwald's propaganda.
•The Nationalist Party Newspaper begins a public pride campaign, encouraging Austrians and Hungarians to work together to get out of the economic crisis. It is largely successful in bolstering public morale, despite a worsening economic situation.
•Grindelwald awarded a medal for his service to the nation and appointed to the governmental cabinet.
•Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander published
1928 •Grindelwald secretly enlists the aid of sympathetic nations to help the economic situation in Austria-Hungary. He demands a higher rank in government for his efforts. Higher-up public officials, worried that his popularity might threaten their power, deny the demand.
•The National Party Newspaper regales Grindelwald's efforts to help the public while criticising many cabinet members for selfishness, hoarding, and attempts to gain power at the cost of the people.
1929 •The National Party instigates a public outcry for public elections. The government promises to abide by these wishes by 1932.
1930s
1930 •Grindelwald continues to gain support, founding public organisations for children and young adults. There they are well fed, put to work on various National Party projects, and thoroughly indoctrinated.
•The Nationalist Party Newspaper begins scapegoating Muggles and the rest of Europe for Austria-Hungary's economic difficulties. The first use of the phrase "For the Greater Good" (Für das größere Wohl) is used as Grindelwald becomes more public with his intention to abolish the statute of secrecy and rule Muggles.
•Grindelwald begins expanding his influence to Germany and Romania.
1931 •Grindelwald continues to establish support in Germany and Romania, who establish their own "Nationalist Parties" with secret goals of uniting all four nations under Grindelwald.
•Violence against Muggles begins to rise again. Grindelwald makes grand speeches that these acts of violence speak to the heart of the citizens' frustrations. He emphasises the need to rule Muggles for the greater good. The government makes no public statement.
•Campaigning for public elections begin in Austria-Hungary. Citizens in Romania and Germany begin clamouring for similar elections.
1932 •Public elections are held in Austria-Hungary. Grindelwald is elected Minister; though he answers to the cabinet, it is largely controlled now by his supporters.
•Outbreaks of violence occur in Germany against Muggles and government officials, who refuse to host public elections.
•Romania agrees to public elections.
•Dumbledore becomes deputy headmaster at Hogwarts
1933 •Grindelwald elected joint-minister to Romania. Violence in Germany continues. He begins to form an army under the guise of self-defence and national pride.
•Grindelwald's efforts to extend his efforts to Bulgaria are vehemently rejected.
•Hitler 'elected' dictator of Germany; first concentration camps open
1934 •Grindelwald stages a 'border threat' on the Bulgarian/Romanian border to install his army in Romania. Bulgaria appeals to the International Confederation of Wizards for action, but they are unwilling to act immediately.
•Violence in Germany continues to build. Grindelwald begins recruiting sympathetic Germans to his army.
•Hitler begins a military conscription; Jews stripped of their rights
•Minister for Magic Sparkwit dies. Minister Aldebaran Shacklebolt appointed.
•The Cleansweep Two is released
1936 •Grindelwald takes military control of Romania and Germany, establishing his 'empire.' The improved economy only bolsters his position. Violence in Germany quells somewhat, leading the ICW to continue stalling.
•German military mobilised and begins occupying other regions
1937 •The Cleansweep Three is released
1938 •The Comet 180 is released
1939 •Though much has been apparently quiet in Grindelwald's empire, he has been building a larger and larger army, as well as hoarding munitions and making allies with dark creatures. He plans to begin invading neighbouring countries on the New Year.
•Czechoslovakia and Poland invaded; euthenasia programmes begin -- hundreds of thousands of mentally disabled and ill Germans are killed before anyone condemns the actions. The USSR allies with Germany. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania ally with the USSR.
•British troops are mobilised. Italy, Ireland, Japan, the US, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark declare neutrality and Switzerland mobilises its troops. Conscription in Britain begins. Chamberlain announces that Britain is at war with Germany. Australia, India, NZ, Newfoundland, South Africa, France, and Canada ally with Britain.
•The British release a report on concentration camps.
1940s
1940 •Grindelwald begins his campaign of terror
•The "National Army" marches on Denmark; the nation quickly allies with Grindelwald and opens its country to allow the army passage.
•With an eye on Norway, and his boyhood school, Durmstrang, Grindelwald rapidly takes Sweden. Finland allies with Grindelwald and Norway, initially resistant, follows suit.
•Nurmengard is established to house Grindelwald's political opponents. However, only the most high ranking opponents are kept there as Grindelwald finds it easier to simply execute those who would oppose him.
•Wizard food rationing begins.
•British food rationing begins.
•The Germans bomb Paris and Italy declares war on Britain and France. Belgium, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and Norway invaded by and surrender to the Germans. France signs a truce with Germany. Britain is now alone in Europe.
•Germany begins its campaign against the British with attacks on the navy, airfields, industry and supply lines. German planes are initially instructed to avoid civilians. A blockade of the British Isles is declared and Italy blockades British ports. The invasion of Britain is scheduled for September but continually postponed.
•British bombings of German cities result in Hitler threatening the obliteration of British cities. The order to avoid civilian targets is retracted, resulting in the Blitz. Ireland refuses to allow Britain use of its ports.
•Winston Churchill becomes Prime Minister after Chamberlain's death.
•Axis powers (Germany, Italy, Japan, and allies) established.
1941 •Grindelwald establishes a recruitment centre in Durmstrang (Norway) and then sets his sights to the East.
•The International Confederation of Wizards convenes non-allied nations, who demand that Grindelwald cease his outward expansion. He promises them full disarmament by summer.
•When it becomes obvious Grindelwald has no intention of disarming, Switzerland and Italy declare their neutrality. France initially allies with England and Bulgaria, the first established "Anti-Grindelwald" nations.
•By the end of the year, Grindelwald's forces have invaded Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Prussia, Poland, and Slovakia. The USSR declares neutrality. Bulgaria fends off a border assault from Romania.
•Grindelwald orders all Bulgarians within Austria-Hungary executed for treason. Massive anti-Muggle demonstrations take place all across the annexed nations. Thousands are murdered.
•Spain and Portugal join those nations opposed to Grindelwald.
•Wizard clothing rationing begins.
•Ireland attacked by German bombers over the New Year; Swansea, South Wales all but destroyed in a German attack. Buckingham palace hit in a bombing of London. England continues to take the brunt of the Blitz.
•The Blitz ends. British clothing rationing begins.
•Hitler begins expanding Auschwitz. Germany turns its attentions to the Soviet Union
•The British government refuses to negotiate with and continues to bomb Germany.
•Conscription expanded to all men between 18 and 50. Women begin serving in fire brigades and other auxiliary groups to protect the homefront.
•Bombing of Pearl Harbour; Japan declares war on the UK and US. The US effectively joins the Allied forces.
1942 January •Yugoslavia attempts to declare neutrality, but is quickly conquered, leading to the conquering of Albania, Greece, and Turkey. Bulgaria appeals for help from the International Confederation of Wizards and English and Spanish troops land to protect its borders.
•United Nations established and 26 Allied nations form a pact against the Axis nations.
•American forces arrive in N Ireland.
•Hitler threatens worldwide annihilation of Jews.
February •Belarus falls, and Ukraine declares neutrality.
•Hundreds of muggles are killed in the bombing of the Netherlands.
•Princess Elizabeth registers for war service.
March •Grindelwald marches on the Netherlands and Belgium
•Conscription in the UK now includes women. The British launch massive air attacks on Germany and France. Isolated air raids on England continue.
April •Belgium falls and France begins to amass an army at its border.
May •The Netherlands fall. The bombing of France begins.
July •Frought with heavy losses, France withdraws from the anti-Grindelwald alliance and declares neutrality.
September •Iceland joins in the anti-Grindelwald alliance.
•The IRA riot in Belfast.
November •English, Spanish, and Bulgarian troops attack Austria and Germany. Both sides endure heavy losses.
December •Montrose Magpies' seeker, Eunice Murray, dies.
