COURSE SYLLABUS:
FLYING & QUIDDITCH

[written by [info]ikaros]

-- Fifth Year meets [M,R]
-- Sixth Year meets [M,W]
-- Seventh Year meets [M,W]

Instructor: Icarus A. Gamp
Office Hours: 5th floor, Monday mornings, Wednesday evenings.

Overview: The earliest recorded achievement of human flight is widely thought to have been accomplished c. 1850 B.C. by the Greek wizard Daedalus--or 'The Great Charlatan,' as he is better known in the magical community, for having used the benefits of his wizarding education to inspire awe amongst muggles as a supposed homo universalis. This, however, cannot be considered a true instance of human aviation, as Daedalus relied on the inherent magical properties imbued in the feathers of a creature that has since devolved into the far less impressive of a beast that we now recognise today as a Snidget. Whereas muggles poetically attribute the failings of the wings to the proximal sun's effect on the wax, the popular wizarding discourse suggests that Daedalus had slain the beast to serve his purpose, which caused the organic properties to decay in potency.

Through Flying & Quidditch, students will gain a holistic understanding of wizarding flight. Flying is not only widely enjoyed as a hobby and sport, but is a life skill. The balanced approach of this course will establish a firm foundation in historical, theoretical and practical aspects of magical aviation. After completing this course, students will be prepared to take on the opulence of the sky with reasonable assurance of surviving most sudden perils through the use of their own spontaneous ingenuity.
